Custom Swimwear Manufacturer – Bikinis & Swimsuits

Fexwear is a custom swimwear manufacturer producing bikinis, one-pieces, board shorts, rash guards and swim leggings in quick-dry, chlorine- and UV-resistant fabrics with proper lining and shaping. With low MOQ, custom prints and hardware, we help swim brands and resorts build ranges that hold their colour and shape through a full season.

This guide covers the fabrics and construction swimwear demands, how lining and fit work, and how to brief a swim range.

How to choose a swimwear manufacturer

A low unit price means little if quality drifts between batches or the supplier disappears when something goes wrong. When you shortlist swimwear suppliers, judge them on control and communication as much as cost:

  • Real factory vs middleman – can they show production lines and control the process?
  • Fabric knowledge – they should advise on GSM, blend and finish for your use case.
  • Sample discipline – a proper pre-production sample before bulk.
  • Decoration durability – logos that survive washing; ask how they test.
  • Sizing & grading – consistent measurements across the size run.
  • Lead-time honesty – realistic dates beat optimistic ones.

A practical test: ask each supplier for a fabric swatch card and a recent sample of comparable swimwear. A real factory produces both quickly and can explain every choice; a reseller stalls or forwards generic photos. Also ask who owns the sewing lines – if the answer is vague, you’re paying a middleman’s margin on top of the risk.

Finally, weigh responsiveness against price. A supplier 5% cheaper who takes a week to answer will cost you more in missed seasons than a partner who replies the same day. The brands that win treat their manufacturer as part of the team, not a line item.

Where to source: Fexwear vs Alibaba vs local

Channel Pros Cons
Fexwear (direct factory) In-house control, low MOQ, free design, direct pricing Pre-production sampling takes a few days
Alibaba / marketplace Huge choice, low list prices Variable quality, middlemen, hard to verify, MOQ surprises
Local manufacturer Fast shipping, easy visits Higher unit cost, limited fabrics & decoration

The risks of sourcing from Alibaba (and how to avoid them)

  • Middlemen posing as factories – many ‘manufacturers’ subcontract, adding cost and cutting you off from the line.
  • Inconsistent, uncontrollable quality – it varies between suppliers and even between batches.
  • Sample-vs-bulk bait-and-switch – the approved sample looks great, the bulk quietly changes.
  • No accountability after payment – chasing fixes or refunds is slow and often fruitless.
  • Misrepresented materials & certifications – claims that can’t be backed by certificates.
  • MOQ and price surprises – list prices that jump once tooling and labels are added.

Alibaba can work if you verify the factory, insist on a pre-production sample and arrange independent QC – but a direct in-house manufacturer gives you comparable pricing with real production control and accountability on every batch.

Swimwear we manufacture

  • Bikinis (triangle, high-waist, bandeau)
  • One-pieces & maillots
  • Board shorts & swim trunks
  • Rash guards & swim tops
  • Swim leggings & skirts
  • Mix & match separates

Swimwear is one of the most construction-sensitive categories. It needs chlorine/UV-resistant fabric, full lining for opacity, shaped seams, secure elastics and hardware that won’t rust. A bikini that looks great flat can fail on a body without proper lining and support – so we engineer the inside as carefully as the outside.

2026 trends

  • Sustainable recycled-Nylon (ECONYL-type) fabrics
  • High-waist & retro silhouettes
  • Mix & match separates
  • UPF sun-protection lines
  • Bold prints & colourblocking

Construction & spec options

Every swimwear is a set of decisions – pick each, or let us recommend a build for your price point:

Spec Options
Style Bikini, one-piece, boardshort, rash guard
Fabric Nylon-spandex, polyester-PBT, recycled poly
Lining Full lining, power mesh, soft cup
Hardware Rust-proof rings, clips, sliders
Protection Chlorine-, UV- & sand-resistant

Two things separate premium swimwear from cheap: fabric that resists chlorine and sun (so colour and elasticity survive), and full lining with proper support. We spec both, and choose the right elastic and hardware so straps and ties hold up in salt and pool water.

Fabrics & GSM

Choose performance swim fabrics:

Fabric Typical weight Best for
Nylon-spandex 180-240 GSM Soft stretch, premium feel
Polyester-PBT 160-220 GSM Chlorine & UV resistant
Recycled poly/nylon varies Sustainable swimwear
Brushed & rib knits varies Fashion swim textures

What is GSM and how to choose fabric weight

GSM (grams per square metre) is the fabric’s weight – the biggest driver of how a garment feels. Lower GSM is lighter and cooler; higher GSM is denser, more opaque and more premium. For swimwear, matching the weight to how it’s worn and washed is what separates a product people reorder from one they return.

GSM range Feel Best for
120-160 GSM Very light, breathable Summer & performance
160-220 GSM Mid-weight, soft Everyday & lifestyle
220-300 GSM Heavy, structured Premium & streetwear
300+ GSM Thick, luxe drape Designer heavyweight

Swim fabric needs strong recovery (so it holds shape wet) and chlorine/UV resistance more than raw weight. Polyester-PBT is the durability workhorse; nylon-spandex feels softer but fades faster in pools – we match the fabric to your market.

Blank vs private-label vs custom vs POD

Model What it is Best for
Blank wholesale Unbranded, you print Fast, low-cost starts
Private label Your fabric, fit & colours to spec A signature product
Custom cut & sew Developed from scratch Full control & differentiation
Print-on-demand Per-unit, no stock Zero-risk testing

Most brands start with blanks to test demand, then move to private label once a style sells. We support all paths, and many clients run two or three at once across different parts of a catalogue.

Decoration & branding options

Method Durability Best for
Screen printing High Bold logos, bulk, spot colours
DTG (digital) Medium-High Detailed, multi-colour, small runs
Embroidery Very high Premium chest & label marks
Dye-sublimation Permanent All-over polyester performance prints
Heat transfer Medium Fast, low-cost, small batches

All-over sublimation is the standard for swim prints because it won’t crack or peel and survives chlorine and sun. We also add rust-proof hardware, contrast lining and branded elastics for a finished, premium look.

MOQ, sampling & lead time

We keep MOQs low so you can test before committing. Sampling runs in stages – a proto sample, a fit sample, then a pre-production (PP) sample that locks fabric, colour and decoration. Standard samples turn around in days; bulk typically takes a few weeks once the PP sample is approved. Sample fees are usually credited against your bulk order, so testing costs little beyond the wait.

What drives the cost

  • Fabric & GSM – performance and heavyweight fabrics cost more.
  • Quantity – unit price falls as order size grows.
  • Decoration – print size, colour count and embroidery complexity.
  • Custom trims – woven labels, special elastics and packaging.
  • Fit development – multiple sample rounds add time and cost.
  • Logistics – destination, Incoterms and shipping method.

The quoted garment price is only part of the real cost. On top of it sits decoration, custom trims, packaging and freight, so always ask for a landed per-unit figure for the fully-branded product rather than comparing bare garment prices. Unit cost also falls with quantity, but not linearly – there’s a steep drop between a tiny test order and a real run, then it flattens, so order enough to reach the flat part for confident styles while keeping unproven ones at low MOQ.

What to send us for an accurate quote

Include: style reference or sketch, target fabric & GSM, size range and measurement chart, colours, logo artwork (vector if possible) and print method, quantity, and target price. No tech pack yet? Send a photo or a competitor example and our design team will build it with you. The more specific your brief, the tighter the price and the shorter the sample turnaround.

Sizing & measurement

Swimwear fit is critical and unforgiving. We build on proper blocks with cup and coverage options, grade consistently across sizes, and provide detailed size charts – because a bikini that doesn’t fit is a return and a lost customer.

Sizing is a profit lever, not a detail: a garment that runs small or stretches unevenly drives returns, and returns eat margin twice – once in shipping, once in the unsellable unit. The fix is a clear, honest size chart with real garment measurements, consistent grading, and a fit sample checked on a body.

Quality control

Every run is checked at three points – pre-production (approved PP sample and materials), inline (during sewing and printing), and final inspection before packing. We inspect to an AQL standard (commonly 2.5 major / 4.0 minor defects for apparel) and photograph key checkpoints so you can see what we saw. You approve the PP sample, and that sample becomes the standard the whole order is judged against.

Sustainable options

Recycled nylon and recycled polyester (from fishing nets and bottles) are now mainstream in swimwear and a strong brand story. We can supply certified recycled fabrics with documentation to back the claim.

If sustainability matters to your buyer, decide early: recycled-polyester and organic-cotton options are the easiest wins and both can be certified. The key is paperwork – a GOTS or GRS scope certificate plus a transaction certificate for your specific order – because that’s what lets you legally and credibly put the claim on your hangtag.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Unlined swimwear that goes sheer when wet
  • Fabric that fades in chlorine/sun after a season
  • Cheap hardware that rusts
  • Poor cup/coverage support so it doesn’t fit
  • No size chart, so returns spike

The most common thread behind all of these is skipping the sample or over-ordering an unproven style. Test broadly with small quantities, watch what actually sells, then concentrate your budget on the winners – suppliers who push you to commit to volume before you have sales data are optimising for their schedule, not your cash flow.

Who we manufacture for

  • Swimwear & resort-wear brands
  • Beach & surf labels
  • Hotels, resorts & cruise lines
  • Fitness & swim clubs
  • Sustainable swim startups
  • Influencer & DTC swim drops

A resort wants durable, colourfast robes and trunks in bulk; a fashion swim label wants recycled fabric and bold prints in small drops; a swim club needs chlorine-resistant training suits. We set fabric, lining and MOQ to each.

Why brands choose Fexwear

  • Chlorine/UV-resistant, fully-lined swimwear
  • Recycled-fabric options with certificates
  • All-over sublimation prints
  • Rust-proof hardware & proper support
  • Low MOQ for emerging swim brands

The short version: you get factory-direct economics with the guidance of a partner who has made the mistakes so you don’t have to. We’ll tell you when a fabric will pill, when a print method is wrong for the garment, and when an order size is unrealistic – and we’ll still make it happen when you’re right.

Order timeline: enquiry to delivery

Stage Typical time
Enquiry & quote 1-2 days
Proto / fit sample 3-7 days
PP sample approval 3-5 days

Working to a launch date or a seasonal drop? Tell us the deadline up front and we’ll build the schedule backwards from it so you’re not air-freighting in a panic.

How to start

  1. Share styles, fabrics & prints
  2. Choose lining, hardware & sizes
  3. Approve a sample for fit & opacity
  4. Bulk production, QC & worldwide shipping

Why swimwear is a construction category, not a printing one

Anyone can print a fun fabric. What separates a good swim brand is the engineering underneath: full lining so nothing goes sheer when wet, power mesh or soft cups for support, chlorine- and UV-resistant fibre so colour and stretch survive a season, and rust-proof hardware so ties and rings don’t fail at the beach. Buyers can’t see most of this on the hanger – but they feel it on day two of a holiday, and that’s what drives reviews and returns. We build the inside as carefully as the outside, which is exactly what a swim brand’s reputation rests on.

Fabric choice: durability vs hand-feel

The classic swimwear trade-off is nylon-spandex (softer, more luxurious hand-feel) versus polyester-PBT (far more chlorine- and UV-resistant, longer colour life). Fashion and resort labels often choose nylon for feel; training and swim-club ranges need polyester for survival in chlorinated water. Recycled versions of both are now available and let you keep the performance while telling a sustainability story. We’ll help you pick per product rather than forcing one fabric across the range.

Lining, support and shaping: what makes swimwear premium

Swimwear is engineered, not just printed. The difference between a premium suit and a cheap one is almost entirely internal: full lining so nothing goes sheer when wet, power mesh or soft cups for real support, shaped seams that follow the body, and elastics that hold without digging. A bikini can look perfect flat and fail completely on a body without this construction. We build the inside as carefully as the outside, because that’s what a swim customer actually judges – and what drives reviews and returns.

Chlorine, sun and salt: engineering swimwear to survive

Swim fabric faces a brutal environment – UV that fades colour, chlorine that breaks down elastane, and salt that abrades. Cheap fabric goes limp and dull within a season. That’s why we specify performance swim fibres: polyester-PBT for maximum chlorine and UV resistance in training and resort ranges, and high-quality nylon-spandex where a softer hand-feel matters more. Get the fibre right and the suit keeps its shape and colour all summer; get it wrong and it’s a one-season product.

Building a mix-and-match swim range

Mix-and-match separates are the smart way to build a swim collection: more style combinations from fewer SKUs, which lowers inventory risk and lets customers buy two tops and two bottoms. Design around a shared set of fabrics, colours and hardware so everything coordinates, then extend with prints. We help you plan the range so it looks abundant while staying efficient to produce and reorder.

Sustainable swimwear: recycled nylon and polyester

Recycled nylon (regenerated from fishing nets) and recycled polyester (from bottles) are now mainstream in swim and a genuine brand story, not a gimmick. They perform comparably to virgin fibre and let you market sustainability credibly – provided you can prove it. We supply GRS-certified recycled swim fabrics with the transaction documentation so your claims hold up.

Sizing, fit and support across a swim range

Swimwear fit is unforgiving – there’s nowhere to hide a bad size run. A bikini needs the right cup structure and coverage, a one-piece needs shaping that holds without pinching, and board shorts need an inseam and waist that work in and out of the water. We build on proper swim blocks, offer cup and coverage options, and provide detailed size charts, because in swim a fit problem is an immediate return.

Hardware, elastics and the details that fail first

Swimwear usually fails at the small parts before the fabric: rings and clasps that rust, elastics that go limp, ties that fray. We use rust-proof hardware and chlorine-resistant elastics so the details hold up as long as the fabric does. It’s unglamorous engineering, but it’s exactly what separates a suit that lasts a season from one that fails on week two.

Care and longevity

Even the best swim fabric dies fast if it’s machine-washed hot and left in a damp bag. We provide care guidance (rinse after salt and chlorine, cool wash, dry in shade) and choose fabrics that forgive real-world care, so your customer’s suit keeps its colour and shape. Longer product life is both a sustainability win and a review win in this category.

Building a resort and travel capsule

Swim sells alongside a holiday story – suits, cover-ups, a robe, a cap. Building a coordinated resort capsule lets you sell multiples per customer and lift order value, with everything in matching fabrics and colours. We help you plan the range so it photographs beautifully and ships as one cohesive collection.

Inclusive and extended-size swim

Swimwear is one of the categories customers most want in genuinely extended sizes, and one of the hardest to fit well. Supporting a fuller figure needs real structure – wider straps, full cups, tummy-control lining, higher coverage – not just a bigger cut of a small design. We build plus and extended swim on proper blocks so it flatters and functions, opening a loyal, underserved market.

Rash guards and UPF sun protection

Beyond fashion swim, rash guards and UPF-rated pieces serve surf, swim-school and sun-conscious markets. These need chlorine- and abrasion-resistant fabric, flat seams for long wear, and a real UPF rating. It’s a functional, repeat-purchase segment that pairs naturally with a fashion swim range to widen your audience.

Fabric and print durability in real use

Swimwear is judged after a holiday, not before it. The fabric must survive UV, chlorine, salt and repeated rinsing without fading or losing stretch, and the print must stay true. That’s why we favour colourfast performance fibres and sublimation prints that won’t crack or wash out. A suit that looks new at the end of summer earns the reviews and the reorder; one that fades in week one quietly ends the customer relationship. We test both on the pre-production sample so durability is proven before bulk.

Testing a swim drop before you scale

Swim is seasonal and unforgiving of dead stock, so the smart launch is a small, well-tested drop: a handful of styles in a tight size and colour range, sold through, then reordered from real demand. Low MOQ makes this possible without a big commitment, and testing on the sample for opacity, fit and print first means the drop you scale is one you’ve already proven.

Why swimwear is a repeat-purchase category

Swimsuits wear out, trends shift each season, and customers buy for different holidays and activities – which makes swim a natural repeat category when the fit and quality are consistent. Lock your blocks, fabrics and size chart, and a customer who loved one suit comes back for the next season’s prints. That consistency is exactly what a reliable manufacturer protects across every reorder.
